Located within Soberanía National Park, Plantation Road is a 4-mile trail named after the plantain and cacao plantation once operated here by the U.S. Government in 1915. Today, the path passes through lush secondary forest, scattered with cacao and rubber trees that remain as living traces of its history.

Experience
This is a half-day tour of moderate difficulty. The trail is mostly flat, though some stretches include gentle inclines and loose gravel. Visitors can enjoy both the natural richness of the forest and a touch of history, making this hike a rewarding balance of nature and culture.

Bird Highlights
Plantation Road is known for its diversity, and some species stand out for their uniqueness:

  • Hook-billed Kite – a secretive raptor with a distinctive hooked beak.

  • White-whiskered Puffbird – often motionless, blending with tree branches.

  • Ocellated Antbird – a striking ant-following specialist with blue facial skin.

  • Tropical Royal Flycatcher – renowned for its spectacular but rarely seen crest.

  • Green Shrike-Vireo – a canopy dweller more often heard than seen, with a sharp, ringing call.
